Porsche Reportedly Eyes RUF Acquisition After Singer Rejection

A report from Germany’s WirtschaftsWoche claims that Porsche is in advanced talks to acquire RUF Automobile, a legendary German firm known for creating high-performance sports cars based on Porsche hardware. RUF, which identifies itself as a family-owned automaker, has long been associated with Porsche, but its cars carry their own manufacturer identity rather than being simply modified Porsches. The company’s most famous creation is the CTR “Yellowbird”, a twin-turbo car that has become an all-time hero car due to its undeniable performance. According to the report, Porsche initially wanted to buy Singer, a California-based Porsche specialist, but was rebuffed, prompting CEO Michael Leiters to turn towards RUF and its owner Alois Ruf. Sources say that Ruf is willing to sell and that a deal could be close. If Porsche were to acquire RUF, it would follow the same logic as Mercedes’ absorption of AMG and BMW’s acquisition of Alpina, allowing Porsche to bring a trusted independent known for making its cars more exclusive in-house. However, RUF’s value lies not in its production capacity, but in its independence, engineering personality, and decades of experience creating unique Porsche-shaped cars that Porsche itself never dared to build. The acquisition would provide RUF with more support and capital than it has ever had, but until either company confirms a transaction, this remains an intriguing rumor.
