The Wyoming Department of Transportation has introduced a self-certification program, WY22 Safe Pass, for drivers of vehicles weighing at least 10,000 pounds and those towing trailers or operating recreational vehicles to ensure safe travel on Teton Pass. The program, which takes about 10 minutes to complete, includes videos, maps, and brake guidance. The pass, known for its steep 10% grades and sharp curves, has a history of deadly crashes. To mitigate risks, drivers are required to check their brakes at designated areas, and trailers are prohibited from November 15 to April 1. Commercial vehicle drivers are encouraged to use an alternative route, US Highway 26, instead. The self-certification process is available at safepass.wyoroad.info, and drivers are urged to drive patiently, cautiously, and defensively, understanding their vehicle’s capabilities and operation, especially downshifting and effective braking techniques. Wyoming Highway Patrol Capt. Marc Russell emphasized that ignoring safety materials and warnings could put lives at risk. The new mandate aims to ensure motorists know the safety precautions for traveling the mountainous stretch of highway connecting Wyoming and Idaho.
