NTSB Probes Amazon Cargo Jet’s Fiery Runway Crash, 5 Killed

A devastating crash occurred at Miami International Airport on September 6, 2026, when an Amazon cargo Boeing 767 overran the runway, killing five people in a cleaning-company van and injuring several others. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the cause of the crash, examining factors such as the plane’s touchdown point, speed, braking, weather, and mechanical condition. The plane, operated by 21 Air, was returning to Miami from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it overran the runway around 2 p.m. and plowed across a road used by warehouse workers and other businesses surrounding the airport. The crash sent thick black smoke billowing into the sky, trapping the pilot and copilot in the cockpit and some occupants in cars. The NTSB plans to release additional findings on September 8 as investigators analyze flight recorder data and other evidence from the crash site. The Miami airport is not equipped with arresting systems, which have been installed at over 120 airports nationwide to safely stop planes that overrun runways. The airport appears to be in compliance, with a 1,000-foot safety buffer at the end of its runways.
