Mercedes-Benz Classic debuts “birth certificate” for cars built between 1986 and 2010

Mercedes-Benz Classic has launched a new service offering a factory-documented “birth certificate” for passenger cars built between 1986 and 2010. The document consolidates the original vehicle configuration data stored in the manufacturer’s archives, presenting it in a high-quality presentation folder. It covers nearly all Mercedes-Benz car model lines from this era—including multiple generations of the E-Class, S-Class, SL, SLK, A-Class, C-Class, and R-Class. The service is currently not available for AMG models, vans, or smart vehicles.

The “birth certificate” includes key vehicle data such as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), brand, vehicle type, body style, shipping date, engine and transmission numbers, paint color, interior trim, and factory-ordered optional extras. It serves as an official manufacturer document that complements existing vehicle history records like service books, owner’s manuals, invoices, and other historical sources.

Available exclusively through the Mercedes-Benz Classic Store, the certificate costs €130 including shipping. To order, customers must provide the VIN and proof of ownership. Once the documents are received, delivery typically takes five business days.

Alexandra Süß, Member of the Management Board at Mercedes-Benz Heritage GmbH, emphasized the emotional value of the document: “Every vehicle has its own story. With the birth certificate, we’re making information from our archives accessible to owners of classic Mercedes-Benz cars. It documents the original delivery condition—from equipment and colors to relevant technical data—and creates a direct link between the individual vehicle and its history. For many enthusiasts, the birth certificate itself becomes a collector’s item.”

The Mercedes-Benz Classic Store also offers a range of accessories from the Drivers’ Collection, literature, clothing, and scale models, with additional services and products for classic car owners in development. This initiative coincides with Mercedes-Benz’s “140 Years of Innovation” anniversary campaign, celebrating 140 years since Carl Benz patented the first automobile in 1886.
