Horse Powertrain has revealed the waterproof B20 petrol engine, designed to operate at a depth of up to 1.1 metres and suitable for hybrids. Announced in early September, the engine can maintain continuous output under extreme high-load off-road environments, including climbing 100% gradients. The 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine produces 189-280 bhp and 221-280 lb ft, depending on conditions. The B20 meets the IPX8 Ingress Protection standard, achieved through a fully sealed structure, dedicated engine-to-transmission sealing, and IPX8-rated electrical components and sensors. These sensors detect when the engine is submerged, allowing the control system to make adjustments such as limiting power or altering throttle response. Configured for efficiency, the engine runs on the Miller cycle, converting 48% of the fuel it burns into mechanical energy. It features high-pressure injection, high-tumble intake ports for ideal air-fuel mixing, and pistons designed to maximise the squish effect to increase turbulence and improve combustion. Additional features include a rigid, gantry-type aluminium cylinder block with an integrated exhaust manifold, a simplified balancer-shaft system, and a variable-displacement oil pump to reduce fuel consumption.
