Old Toyotas don’t die; they just get upgraded. That’s the lesson from a Jalopnik staffer who swapped a stock head unit in his wife’s 2006 Toyota 4Runner for a modern Apple CarPlay unit, breathing new life into a 20-year-old SUV with nearly 300,000 miles on the clock. The move wasn’t just about nostalgia—it was a practical fix for a failing auxiliary audio input jack that had cut off Spotify access, leaving the stock six-disc CD changer as the only music source. But the upgrade delivered far more than restored tunes: it brought wireless CarPlay, dashboard navigation, and a modern infotainment experience to a vehicle that still runs like a tank.

The project was a DIY affair, guided by Crutchfield’s vehicle-specific kits and wiring harnesses, which eliminated the need for splicing or cutting into the 4Runner’s factory wiring. The process involved removing the original head unit, transplanting mounting brackets, trimming trim pieces to fit the wider CarPlay unit, and soldering the wiring harness for a permanent connection. Despite minor modifications—like grinding down metal nubs on the brackets and trimming side trim—the installation was straightforward thanks to detailed instructions and basic hand tools. The interior plastic, remarkably intact after two decades, came apart with minimal effort, a stark contrast to the crumbling trim in the writer’s Dodge farm truck.

Once reassembled, the CarPlay unit delivered wireless phone pairing, a backup camera input (unused here), and a microphone with GPS antenna for hands-free calls and navigation. The result? A 20-year-old SUV that now feels like a modern ride, all for a fraction of the cost of a new car. The writer’s only regret? His 2021 Ford Transit camper van lacks CarPlay, while his previous 2003 E-250 had it—a reminder that older vehicles are often easier and cheaper to upgrade than newer ones.
