Hyundai is planning to enhance its simulated gearbox technology in its next-gen electric N models, with possible features including idling, backfiring, and vibrations. The brand’s head of R&D, Manfred Harrer, stated that Hyundai is already testing the upgraded technology, aiming to make it ‘even more realistic’ and ‘enhance it further’. The next-gen electric N cars will also ride on the automaker’s upcoming Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA), which will offer upgraded thermal management and new battery technology to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Additionally, Hyundai has filed a patent for a shift-by-wire mechanism that can operate like a gated manual or a traditional automatic transmission, which could be paired with new software upgrades to enhance the driving experience. The new electric N cars are expected to arrive in the next few years, with the brand’s first EVs being five years old and due for replacement. Hyundai’s focus on simulated gearbox technology is not surprising, given the positive response from customers and the fact that other automakers have followed Hyundai’s lead in adding similar software enhancements.
