Catalytic converter theft is on the rise again in the United States, with over 137,000 stolen last year, according to Carfax. The main targets are pickups and SUVs, such as the Ford F-150, Hyundai Tucson, and Ford Explorer, due to their higher ground clearance, making it easier for thieves to access the converters. The precious metals inside, including platinum, palladium, and rhodium, are the main attraction, with rhodium prices more than doubling in the past year to $11,000 per ounce. Hybrid converters are particularly valuable, selling for up to $1,400, while standard converters can fetch $25-$300. Replacement costs can reach $3,000, a significant burden for drivers without comprehensive coverage. To protect their vehicles, owners can park in well-lit areas, use locked garages, install motion-sensor lights, and consider metal cages or anti-theft devices for their catalytic converters. Engraving the vehicle’s VIN onto the converter can also help authorities track it down if stolen.
