Towing a trailer can be challenging, especially in windy or bumpy conditions. Strong crosswinds can push the trailer from side to side, causing it to sway, while rough pavement can load and unload the weight on the hitch, leading to swaying.

The root cause of these issues is poor weight distribution. To tow safely in such conditions, it’s essential to know the effects of weight distribution on towing.

A trailer’s weight should be centered just ahead of its axles for maximum stability. Too much weight at either end of the trailer can be a recipe for disaster.

Proper loading is one key to towing in windy or bumpy conditions, and a specialized hitch with dedicated weight-distribution and/or sway-control functions can also be helpful. Weight distribution hitches work by transferring some of the extra mass backward onto the trailer through spring arms, which limit vertical movement at the point where the trailer and tow vehicle meet.

Anti-sway hitches, on the other hand, help when there’s too much weight at the rear of the trailer, using friction bars to mitigate horizontal swaying. Some hitches have active measures, such as cams, to hold the trailer in place and add pushing power to get it back in line with the tow vehicle.
