Ford has announced that its next-generation F-150 Lightning will feature Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) technology, combining an electric powertrain with a generator-backed estimated range of more than 700 miles. According to the automaker, the setup retains the instant response of an EV while reducing the need to stop and charge on longer trips or during towing. The truck is propelled 100 percent by electric motors, which Ford says differentiates it from a traditional hybrid. It is intended to maintain the EV driving experience, offering rapid acceleration, quiet operation, and long-distance towing support. Like the current model, the next-generation F-150 Lightning EREV is expected to offer exportable electricity to power work sites, campsites, or homes during power outages. Doug Field, Ford’s chief EV, digital and design officer, stated that the EREV setup delivers instant torque and pure electric driving while using a high-power generator to achieve the 700-plus mile estimated range for heavy-duty towing and cross-country travel. Production of the current F-150 Lightning will end this year, and the next-generation F-150 Lightning EREV will be built at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, with further details and launch timing to be shared later.
