Acura is gearing up to expand its SUV lineup significantly, with three new models bound for North America starting in 2028. Recent patent filings with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) reveal four new trademarked names: TDX, LDX, TYPE-TRAIL, and TYPE T.

While Acura already offers the Type S performance trim, the new Type-Trail and Type T trademarks hint at potential off-road-oriented trim levels for existing products, capitalising on the success of parent company Honda and its TrailSport lineup. Acura plans to launch an all-new replacement for the current RDX, a more adventuresome SUV in 2028, and a larger eight-passenger SUV sitting above the MDX as the largest Acura ever built.

With EV plans on hold, these new vehicles will feature fresh hybrid powertrains, including a new V-6 hybrid intended for larger SUVs and a two-motor hybrid slated to debut in the next-generation RDX. These additions will give Acura direct competition for rivals like Lexus and its rugged, Land Cruiser-based GX.
