A California resident, Jason Bullock, has filed a lawsuit against Ford in federal court in Michigan, arguing that customers who paid inflated prices for their vehicles due to tariffs should receive refunds if Ford gets billions back from overturned import duties. The lawsuit claims that Bullock paid a higher price for his Mexico-built Ford Mustang Mach-E because tariff costs had been included in the sticker price and destination charges. However, the US Supreme Court struck down the tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, making companies that paid those duties eligible for substantial refunds from the federal government. Ford expects a one-time benefit of roughly $1.3 billion from recovering tariffs paid between March 2025 and February 2026. The complaint argues that Ford should not be allowed to keep both the higher prices charged during the tariff period and the refunds received afterward, as this would result in a ‘double recovery and unjust windfall.’ Ford has confirmed it is reviewing the complaint, citing its commitment to providing affordable and accessible vehicles. The case could have wider implications for the industry, as General Motors and Stellantis also expect to receive tariff-related reimbursements, potentially leading to similar legal challenges.
