The BMW Group is advancing the use of Physical AI in production with the Figure 03 project at its Plant Spartanburg in the USA. Following a successful deployment of the humanoid robot Figure 02, the next-generation Figure 03 robot will start working on complex sequencing applications in logistics.

The robot will pick up and sort delivered components into a sequencing trolley, which will then be transported to the installation location. The use of humanoid robots is part of the BMW Group’s strategy to expand its automation portfolio with Physical AI, aiming to protect and utilize employees while improving workplaces.

The project is closely linked to the digital transformation of production at Plant Spartanburg, where digital applications such as virtual 3D simulations and artificial intelligence are being used to optimize processes and ensure consistent quality. The BMW iFACTORY approach is being implemented in daily production operations, with a focus on optimizing employee ergonomics and using artificial intelligence for quality assurance.

The Figure 03 robot introduces new features such as soft components for enhanced safety, wireless charging, and audio functions for speech-to-speech communication, as well as improved hands with tactile sensors and palm cameras for increased precision and dexterity.
