Thirty years ago, Toyota bet big on Princeton, Indiana—a small town better known for popcorn and basketball—by building its second U.S. vehicle plant there. Today, that gamble has paid off in spades.
Toyota Indiana now employs nearly 8,000 workers assembling three Toyota models and one Lexus model, with over 8 million vehicles rolling off its assembly lines since production began. The facility’s success was celebrated at a 30-year milestone event, where Indiana Governor Mike Braun praised the plant as a cornerstone of the state’s economy, highlighting its world-class workforce, manufacturing excellence, and innovation.

The celebration also underscored the facility’s $200 million expansion to boost Grand Highlander production, a move that Governor Braun called a testament to the symbiotic partnership between Toyota and southwestern Indiana. Jason Puckett, president of Toyota Indiana, emphasized the human element behind the plant’s achievements, stating, “Our team members are the true heart of this operation.” Their dedication has cemented Toyota Indiana as a leader in quality and innovation.
Beyond manufacturing, the plant has woven itself into the community fabric. Toyota announced $330,000 in grants to local organizations, including the University of Evansville and North Gibson School Corporation, to support STEM education through the Driving Possibilities initiative.

The YMCA of Southwestern Indiana’s Camp Carson received funds for facility upgrades, while a $200,000 pledge to Mudpuppy Palace will fund a nature-based learning center offering STEAM activities. Over three decades, Toyota has invested $8.2 billion in Indiana and donated over $55 million in grants, alongside countless volunteer hours, to empower future generations and strengthen community ties.

The plant’s legacy is a blueprint for long-term manufacturing partnerships, proving that vision, perseverance, and community collaboration can turn a small-town dream into an industrial powerhouse.
