Toyota Motor Corp. has halted development of the next-generation Lexus LF-ZC electric vehicle, a move that scraps plans for a mid-2027 launch and buries advanced features like gigacasting and faster-charging batteries. The decision reflects a sweeping recalibration of electrification strategy as weak demand and fading U.S. subsidies force automakers to scale back EV ambitions.

The LF-ZC was originally slated for 2026 before local media reported a delay to 2027, but those plans are now off the table entirely. Key innovations—including gigacasting and cost-effective, high-speed charging batteries—will be repurposed for other models as Toyota shifts focus toward profitability and revises its EV sales targets, including a 2026 goal of 1.5 million electric vehicles.

The move underscores a broader retreat among major automakers from aggressive EV expansion amid slowing demand growth and uncertain government incentives. Toyota’s decision aligns with a company-wide review of new projects under CEO Kenta Kon, who has prioritized improving profitability over rapid electrification.

The LF-ZC concept was first shown in 2023, but its cancellation signals a sharp pivot in Lexus’s electrified future.
