Volkswagen Group is doubling down on its cost-cutting crusade with a sweeping plan to slash complexity across its sprawling model lineup. The German automotive giant is targeting fewer models and variants, prioritizing high-volume products that sell best rather than maintaining a bloated range with middling demand. This strategic pivot mirrors Toyota’s own efforts to streamline its lineup, aiming to make it easier for customers to navigate the brand’s offerings while reducing production overcapacity. The transformation is part of a broader restructuring drive that has already seen factory costs at VW’s German plants cut by over 20% in 2025 alone. By 2030, the company expects to achieve annual net cost savings exceeding €6 billion, though CEO Oliver Blume admits the road ahead remains challenging. The plan hinges on eight key initiatives, with the first focusing squarely on reducing portfolio complexity. Volkswagen Group will also slash the number of platforms and electronic architectures, a move designed to lower costs, simplify development, and accelerate time-to-market. Addressing overcapacity at underutilized factories is another critical pillar of the strategy. While some models are already on the chopping block—including the Audi A1, Audi Q2, and the aging Volkswagen Touran minivan—the Group isn’t slowing its product offensive. Over 30 new models debuted last year, with another 20 slated for 2026. Recent launches include the ID. Polo, Cupra Raval, Skoda Epiq, and Audi A6 Allroad, while the Audi A2 is set to return as an entry-level electric model later this year. Skoda is also preparing to unveil its seven-seat Peaq electric SUV. The Group’s aggressive restructuring includes a workforce reduction of up to 50,000 jobs across Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and software subsidiary CARIAD, with agreements for over 28,000 employees already finalized. Despite the turmoil, VW remains bullish on its future, betting that a leaner, more focused lineup will drive higher volumes and profitability. The question now is which models will survive the cull—and which will be consigned to the history books.
