McLaren has hinted that the upcoming successor to its 750S V8 supercar will be named the McL 820 and will pack an 809bhp punch, setting it up to rival the V12-engined Ferrari 12Cilindri. Set to arrive next year, the new supercar will be the first new series-production car launched since the brand was acquired by Abu Dhabi investment fund L’imad. The naming hint was revealed during a publicity stunt in Covent Garden, London, on October 29, where the moniker was hidden on a giant sculpture of the brand’s trademark kiwi mascot. This follows the adoption of the new ‘McL’ initialism seen on the limited-run McL 6GT, aligning with a brand-wide refresh that includes a new logo and typeface inspired by McLaren’s original workshop signage. The McL 820 will replace the core 750S supercar, which is retiring next year after a decade on sale in forms including the original 720S and the 788HS run-out special, with final orders currently being taken. Power will come from one of two new hybrid powertrains developed and produced in-house by McLaren — expected to be V8-based — with the name indicating its power output in PS, translating to 809bhp. This makes it Woking’s most potent series-production car yet, rivaling the Ferrari 12Cilindri, Aston Martin Vanquish, Ferrari 296, and Lamborghini Temerario. Chief operating officer Michael Straughan noted that the new engines will start with current V8 products or their future generation. The launch coincides with the wind-down of the Artura V6 and GT models, though McLaren plans to phase in replacements smoothly without a production pause. Traditional supercars will form one of three pillars in the brand’s new range, alongside a front-engined SUV to rival the Porsche Cayenne and limited-run Ultimate Series models like the W1.
