Tesla unveiled a Roadster prototype on October 15, 2026, at SpaceX’s 4,000-acre rocket development facility in McGregor, Texas, showcasing a vehicle utilizing SpaceX-developed thrusters to jump over cars and perform aerial stunts. CEO Elon Musk hosted the livestreamed event before an audience, calling the creation something unseen in any movie. The high-performance sports car is designed with aerospace aesthetics, two seats, and a Cybertruck-style steer-by-wire system. Tesla showed a video of the vehicle accelerating from zero to 60 mph in under 1 second. The aerodynamic features provide passive downforce approaching Formula 1 levels, utilizing wing actuation driven by the Tesla Optimus actuator system.

The long-delayed vehicle, first announced in 2017, is expected to enter production in 2028. The original Roadster was launched in 2008 and discontinued in 2012. Tesla’s current consumer vehicle lineup consists of the Model 3, Model Y, and the Cybertruck, alongside the commercial Semi truck and the Cybercab robotaxi, while two consumer models were discontinued earlier this year. The Roadster aims to refresh Tesla’s aging vehicle lineup and combat consecutive annual sales declines, though analysts note the high-priced car will have limited sales volume.

Reservations are currently open on the Tesla website for a road-ready version and a limited-release “thrust” race-ready package featuring acceleration thrusters and a multi-mode suction system, while a flying version is tied to an invite-only “Rocket” package that remains unapproved for public roads. Analysts like Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management described the reveal as an engineering flex hinting at a potential merger between Tesla and SpaceX, a sentiment echoed by CFRA senior equity research analyst Garrett Nelson regarding growing overlap between Musk’s enterprises, which includes joint ventures like the Terafab semiconductor plant. Financial updates from both entities are scheduled shortly, with SpaceX reporting quarterly earnings on October 20 and Tesla following the next day.
