BMW’s latest M5 Touring is proving a surprise hit in the U.S., with sales split nearly 50:50 between the wagon and sedan versions. The unexpected demand has prompted the brand to explore bringing more Touring models to America where it makes sense. Speaking to Bimmer Life, BMW North America’s Vice President of Project Management, Michael Keller, confirmed that the automaker will “look into Touring concepts” for the U.S. market moving forward. “There is momentum in the market… So to your question in the future, we will look into Touring concepts where it makes sense for the US market, because at the moment we are quite happy with the M5,” Keller said. The enthusiasm for wagons isn’t lost on BMW, which has taken note of customer petitions demanding the M3 Touring in the U.S. While the brand previously prioritized the M5 Touring over the M3 Touring as a “logical decision,” the growing clamor for the five-door performance car could shift priorities. The success of the M5 Touring—paired with competitive pressure from Audi’s RS6 Avant and RS5 Avant, Mercedes-Benz’s E-Class wagons, and Volvo’s wagon revival—suggests a broader appetite for performance wagons in the U.S. could be emerging. Keller’s comments leave the door open for future Touring models, though no specific models or timelines were confirmed. For now, BMW is content with the M5 Touring’s performance but is clearly listening to enthusiast demand.
