Ford is recalling 548,463 SUVs spanning model years 2018 through 2024 due to a safety defect involving peeling chrome trim on the center console. The recall covers the full Expedition lineup during those years. The issue stems from chrome plating that can bubble and peel from the base material, creating sharp edges capable of injuring passengers. Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group (CCRG) launched an investigation in October 2025 after spotting a trend in NHTSA’s Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) for 2019–2020 Expeditions. Five of the six VOQs reported hand injuries caused by the sharp trim. Initially, Ford determined a safety recall wasn’t necessary, arguing the defect was easily detectable and mitigated injury risk. However, after expanding its review of warranty claims, field reports, and injury data, the automaker concluded injuries could be more severe than initially assessed. Ford now reports 4,634 warranty claims, 65 injuries, and one accident globally, including hand and finger lacerations, some requiring professional medical attention. The fix involves replacing the center console trim with chrome plating that meets Ford’s specifications. This marks Ford’s 41st recall of 2025, following 138 recalls issued throughout the year.
