EU Could Fine Daimler Truck 1 Billion Euros Over Emissions Rules

Daimler Truck, the world’s largest truck maker, could face a fine of approximately 1 billion euros ($1.2 billion) if it fails to meet the European Union’s 2030 emissions targets. According to CEO Karin Rådström, the company may fall 10% to 15% short of the target due to weak demand, limited charging infrastructure, and affordability issues, despite investing in zero-emission trucks. Rådström considers the potential penalties unfair, stating that Daimler Truck has developed several emission-free models, but the lack of charging infrastructure and high costs are limiting demand. The company’s market share in zero-emission vehicle trucks is around 38% in Europe, but overall sales remain small, with battery-powered commercial vehicles accounting for only 6% of the total market. Daimler Truck has reported an improved outlook, driven by higher demand in North America and a US tariff exemption for many Mexico-assembled parts. The company secured a tariff exemption for over half of its truck parts assembled in Mexico but produced in the US, which is expected to positively impact its financial performance.
