A veteran Ford engineer has filed a lawsuit against the automaker, claiming he was terminated just months before his pension benefits vested, in what he alleges was an attempt to deny him enhanced retirement compensation. The engineer, who worked for Ford for approximately 33 years—both as a contractor and direct employee—contributed to programs including the Ford Bronco and Lincoln LS. At 59 years old, he was dismissed in January 2025 without warning, despite reportedly complying with all company policies and meeting four performance objectives set for the end of 2024. The engineer contested a negative performance review through Ford’s internal process, arguing that his new supervisor, who had only worked with him for a few months, lacked a full understanding of his decades-long track record. The lawsuit highlights discrepancies in treatment, noting that younger, less experienced engineers involved in similar programs—including one placed on a performance improvement plan—were retained. The crux of the case centers on whether the termination was discriminatory, targeting the engineer’s age and proximity to his 30-year service milestone, which would have unlocked substantial pension benefits. Ford’s recent pivot away from over-reliance on AI to address quality issues—bringing back experienced engineers to train younger workers and AI systems—adds context to the dispute, though the company has not commented on the allegations. The legal battle will now determine if the firing violated labor laws and whether the engineer was unfairly deprived of his earned retirement benefits.
