Michelin’s ResiCare division and Axens have launched exclusive negotiations for a strategic partnership to industrialize and globally deploy 5-HMF (5-Hydroxymethylfurfural), a critical bio-based molecule for decarbonized chemistry. The molecule, developed in collaboration with IFP Energies Nouvelles (IFPEN), serves as a renewable building block for resins, polymers, adhesives, and bio-based plastics such as polyethylene furanoate (PEF)—a credible alternative to petroleum-derived PET used in packaging, bottles, and textiles. The technology also enables the replacement of fossil-based compounds like formaldehyde with plant-derived alternatives. Axens will contribute its licensing and engineering expertise to scale the technology globally, while Michelin ResiCare will operate the first production unit in Péage-de-Roussillon, France, with a capacity of approximately 3,000 tonnes per year. Commissioning is targeted for early 2027. The partnership aims to deliver a high-performance, competitive, and sustainable solution to meet rising demand in green chemistry. Michelin ResiCare and Axens emphasized the molecule’s potential across solvents, specialty chemicals, and broader industrial applications. The project reflects Axens’ ambition to convert breakthrough innovations into industrial realities, with Jacinthe Frecon, VP of Process and Equipment Innovation at Axens, stating: “This project fully illustrates Axens’ ambition to turn breakthrough innovations into concrete industrial solutions on a global scale.” Laurent Lemonnier, CEO of Michelin ResiCare, added: “We are convinced that 5-HMF is set to become a reference platform molecule for sustainable chemistry.” The collaboration builds on an R&D program supported by ADEME in France and the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) in Europe. Axens, an IFP Group company, provides end-to-end solutions for cleaner fuel conversion, petrochemical intermediates, chemical recycling, and natural gas treatment, with a focus on carbon capture. Michelin ResiCare, a Michelin Group brand, develops sustainable adhesive solutions leveraging Michelin’s polymer and materials science expertise across mobility, construction, aeronautics, and low-carbon energy sectors.
