Markus Flasch, CEO of BMW Motorrad, has officially taken over as President of the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM) effective 1 July 2026. His two-year term begins at a critical juncture for the motorcycle industry, as Europe’s mobility ecosystem undergoes rapid transformation amid regulatory pressures, shifting urban mobility demands, and intensifying global competitiveness. Flasch’s election was confirmed during the ACEM General Assembly, held at BMW Welt in Munich. He succeeds Michele Colaninno in the role. The ACEM Presidium now includes Vice-Presidents Claudio Domenicali (CEO, Ducati Motor Holding), Clément Villet (Director of Land Mobility, Yamaha Motor Europe N.V.), and Michele Colaninno (CEO, Piaggio Group). Flasch’s presidency will prioritize three core objectives: integrating L-category vehicles—mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles, and quadricycles—into sustainable urban mobility frameworks across Europe; accelerating the industry’s decarbonisation efforts while protecting its industrial competitiveness; and championing motorcycling as a leisure, touring, and sporting activity that drives economic growth and societal value. “Our mission is to amplify the motorcycle industry’s voice in Europe,” Flasch stated. “L-category vehicles aren’t a niche—they’re part of the solution to Europe’s mobility challenges. We have the technology, the ambition, and the responsibility to deliver sustainability without compromising accessibility, safety, or enjoyment.” A key focus will be ensuring European regulations foster innovation and investment while maintaining a technology-neutral stance that aligns with customer needs. Antonio Perlot, Secretary General of ACEM, emphasized the industry’s strategic importance: “The motorcycle sector is a cornerstone of the European economy, and ACEM will continue advocating for policies that recognize the societal benefits of L-category vehicles.” Flasch’s leadership signals a proactive approach to shaping the future of European motorcycling, balancing sustainability imperatives with the sector’s economic vitality and emotional resonance.
