A class action lawsuit has been filed against Stellantis, alleging that the company falsely advertised the 2022 and 2023 Ram ProMaster vans as having a 9-speed automatic transmission. The lawsuit claims that the vans are so slow that they never engage eighth or ninth gear, making them effectively 7-speeds instead. The plaintiffs, Victor Gonzalez and Stuart Glick, argue that Stellantis promised that the higher gear ratios in the nine-speed transmission’s top gears would reduce engine RPM compared to the old 6-speed, but this is only true if the transmission actually uses those gears. The lawsuit alleges that Stellantis either was or should have been aware of this issue, yet chose to ignore it and market the vans as having 9-speed transmissions. The Ram ProMaster is powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, which produces 280 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The lawsuit’s allegations are based on the idea that the transmission’s gear ratios and programming may prevent the van from using all nine gears, effectively making it a 7-speed transmission. However, the author notes that other vans, such as the Ford Transit, can use all ten gears of their transmission, even with a similar engine size and horsepower. The outcome of the lawsuit is still uncertain and will depend on the court’s decision.
