Ford’s Pro Trailer Backup Assist is a semi-autonomous system that lets you back up a trailer without touching the steering wheel, using a simple knob near the infotainment screen. Twist the knob in the direction you want the trailer to go, and the truck’s computer takes over steering while you control throttle and brakes. The system relies on data from surround-view cameras, sensors, and trailer profiles to guide the trailer accurately.

Ford’s Pro Trailer Hitch Assist, a separate feature introduced in 2023, goes further by automatically controlling speed and braking to align the hitch ball with the trailer coupler. Both systems are available in Ford models like the F-150 and Maverick hybrid pickup. Before using Pro Trailer Backup Assist, calibration is required.

This involves setting up a trailer profile with details like dimensions and weight, placing a provided sticker below the backup camera within 4 to 19 inches of the hitch ball, and following on-screen instructions to drive straight and turn left and right. For gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers, a sensor kit must be installed. Once calibrated, the system saves the setup, and you can recall it for up to 10 different trailers.

The calibration is a one-time process per trailer, but recalibration is needed if you switch trailers. Ford also offers Trailer Reverse Guidance to help drivers understand how to maneuver with the system.
