Why Mazda Is Literally a God-Tier Name for a Car Company

Mazda’s name isn’t just a random corporate label—it’s a deliberate fusion of corporate history and spiritual symbolism. The automaker traces its roots to 1920, when Toyo Cork Kogyo was founded.

A year later, Jujiro Matsuda took over as president and pivoted the company from cork production into machinery, eventually leading to car manufacturing. The phonetic link between “Matsuda” and “Mazda” is unmistakable in Japanese, where the surname is pronounced identically to the brand name.

But the story doesn’t end there. Mazda officially adopted its name in 1931 with the launch of its first vehicle, the three-wheeled Mazda-Go truck, and registered the trademark in March 1934.

The deeper significance, however, lies in Mazda’s connection to Ahura Mazda, the Zoroastrian deity of wisdom, intelligence, and harmony. Mazda has publicly acknowledged this divine inspiration, stating it interpreted Ahura Mazda as a symbol of both Eastern and Western civilizations and a beacon for automobile culture, world peace, and industrial progress.

The automaker’s early spiritual leanings were so strong that even the names proposed for its first truck included Sumera-Go and Tenshi-Go—both tied to divinity and angelic themes. Mazda’s logo evolution reflects this spiritual narrative.

When the brand launched its luxury division Eunos in 1990, the logo was designed to evoke Ahura Mazda, emphasizing human-friendly vehicles and enriching customer experiences. The current winged logo, introduced in 1997, continues this tradition.

While Mazda’s wartime production of rifles and carbines during World War II diverges from its peaceful ethos, the company’s post-war recovery and eventual focus on automotive innovation reaffirmed its commitment to harmony and progress. Today, Mazda stands out in the automotive landscape not only for its engineering choices—like the recent all-new inline-6 engine and continued exploration of rotary and hybrid powertrains—but also for a brand name steeped in myth and meaning.
