The Volkswagen Group is reportedly considering its largest corporate shake-up in decades, with potential job cuts of up to 100,000 worldwide and the possibility of spinning off its core brand. Four German factories, including Volkswagen’s plants in Hanover, Emden, and Zwickau, as well as Audi’s site in Neckarsulm, may cease vehicle production once current programs end, putting tens of thousands of jobs at risk. The proposed overhaul also includes lower investment spending, major administrative cuts, and changes to the company’s organization. This comes as the company faces declining profits, with a 44 percent drop in 2025, and increasing competition. CEO Oliver Blume and CFO Arno Antlitz are said to be considering these measures to make the company leaner. Labor representatives, including Germany’s IG Metall union and VW’s works council, have expressed strong opposition to the reported plans and have warned they will fight any attempts to implement them. A key supervisory board meeting is scheduled for July 9, which will determine the fate of the proposed overhaul. The company has not confirmed any of the reported details, but a spokesperson stated that the entire group must undergo far-reaching change to remain competitive.
