President Donald Trump’s motorcade drove directly across the drained Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool during a May 7 visit, potentially contributing to damage to the newly painted liner and underlying concrete. The incident unfolded as workers rushed to complete a $14.6 million renovation—nearly double the original $6.8 million estimate—before the America250 festivities.

The project, funded by the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, replaced the pool’s leaky asphalt and tile bottom with a concrete foundation supported by 2,133 timber piles driven into bedrock. The new surface was coated with Rhino Linings’ Pipeliner 5000 polyurea, a material typically used for swimming pools but not designed to withstand vehicle traffic.
Photos show the motorcade, including the presidential limousine (weighing upwards of 20,000 pounds) and armored Chevy Suburban HD escorts (around 12,000 pounds each), crossing the pool from the Washington Monument side. Experts suggest the heavy vehicles may have cracked the concrete, creating uneven surfaces that prevent the liner from adhering properly and allowing moisture to penetrate from below.

Swimming Pool Steve, a consultant on the algae issue, described this as “negative hydrostatic pressure,” where pressure from below pushes the liner away from the surface. The liner’s failure could also stem from inadequate surface preparation amid the rushed timeline, as workers face pressure to finish in weeks rather than the nearly two years the Obama-era renovation took.

The pool’s blue color, intended to mimic the “American Flag Blue,” has been obscured by algae, complicating assessments of the damage. President Trump has blamed vandals for the liner’s separation, while some visitors, including former Olympian David Hearn, have been arrested for touching the damaged areas. The full extent of the damage will only be clear once the pool is drained for repairs.
