An explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan gas export terminal on June 21 injured at least 54 people and left 18 missing as workers attempted to restart operations following Iranian attacks. The blast occurred at the Barzan facility, a key natural gas supply hub with a capacity of almost 1.4 billion standard cubic feet of sales gas per day, primarily used for local electricity generation and water desalination in Qatar. The incident raises fresh concerns over global energy markets as Qatar, one of the world’s top natural gas producers, grapples with disruptions caused by tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. QatarEnergy and authorities are still assessing the damage and conducting search and rescue efforts, with uncertainty persisting over when full production and export operations can resume. The explosion follows an earlier Iranian missile strike on Ras Laffan in March, which caused extensive damage and forced Qatar to halt production. Qatar shares the massive offshore North Field natural gas deposit with Iran, a resource that has underpinned its economic growth and global influence, funding initiatives like the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Al Jazeera, and international mediation efforts. ExxonMobil holds a minority stake in the Barzan plant, though the company did not immediately comment on the latest incident.
