California is rolling out a $3,500 instant rebate for first-time electric-vehicle buyers, funded jointly by the state and automakers. The program, part of a $135.5 million budget deal, applies the discount at the point of sale—no post-purchase tax-credit paperwork required.

New EVs must have an MSRP of $50,000 or less to qualify, while used EVs cap at $25,000. California-based zero-emission manufacturers (read: Tesla) can exceed those price ceilings and still collect the rebate.

The incentive is half the amount for used EVs. Other rules: curb weight ≤ 8,500 lb and the vehicle must be registered to a California resident.

The move comes eight months after the federal $7,500 EV tax credit was rescinded by the Trump administration. California already leads the nation with EVs and hybrids accounting for over 20% of new registrations in 2025, and state officials expect the rebate to push that share even higher amid worsening air quality in the Los Angeles basin.
