Michelin North America Inc. has announced plans to close its BFGoodrich tire plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, by the end of 2028 due to “structural inefficiencies” and increasing competition in the off-the-road (OTR) markets. The production of BFGoodrich Tires will be consolidated at the company’s plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This decision will impact approximately 1,200 employees in Tuscaloosa as tire production and rubber-mixing activities are phased out over the next two years. According to Michelin, both the Alabama and Indiana sites operate below their designed capacities, resulting in inefficiencies. The company believes the Fort Wayne factory is better positioned to meet future demands for BFGoodrich Tires due to its size, footprint, and infrastructure. Michelin North America intends to work with stakeholders to explore new uses for the Tuscaloosa site.
