General Motors is preparing to launch the Buick Electra GS plug-in hybrid sedan in China, built as a joint venture with SAIC. The rollout comes as Buick experiences a 20.4% year-over-year decline in deliveries in China, according to China EV DataTracker.

The model was revealed through listings from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) during domestic homologation. Measuring 4,979 mm long, 1,914 mm wide, and 1,495 mm tall with a 2,865 mm wheelbase, the Electra GS is a large sedan that spans 149 mm longer than the BYD Qin L DM-i (also marketed overseas as the Seal 6).
Design details feature a closed front end with a trapeze-shaped air intake, U-shaped headlights, semi-hidden door handles, a sleek roofline, a continuous taillight unit, and a ducktail spoiler. Approach and departure angles measure 13 and 14 degrees, respectively, while wheel options include 18-inch (225/50 R18) or 19-inch (234/45 R19) setups.
An optional roof-mounted LiDAR sensor is also available. Curb weight ranges from 1,780 to 1,890 kg, with a gross weight of 2,300 kg.

Two powertrain variants are available. The entry-level variant pairs a SAIC-manufactured 1.5-liter naturally aspirated 15FMC petrol engine producing 72 kW (97 HP) with a 165 kW (221 HP) electric motor.

This setup utilizes LFP battery packs supplied by Zenergy and Rept Battero, and achieves a top speed of 190 km/h. A more powerful variant swaps the naturally aspirated engine for a 1.5-liter turbocharged LD3 engine delivering 115 kW (154 HP), paired with the same 165 kW (221 HP) electric motor, a Zenergy LFP battery, and a top speed of 190 km/h.

The entry-level Buick Electra GS is positioned to compete against models like the BYD Qin L DM-i, which combines a 74 kW (99 HP) 1.5-liter engine with a 160 kW (215 HP) electric motor and recorded 70,740 deliveries in China between January and September 2026. Domestic pricing for the Buick Electra GS is expected to start above 100,000 yuan (14,970 USD).
