Ford‘s upcoming 2028 Fathom Electric compact truck boasts an ambitious price tag of $29,945, thanks in part to the company’s adoption of a Tesla-inspired manufacturing technique. Dubbed ‘unicasting,’ this process involves creating giant aluminum castings that replace multiple smaller parts, significantly reducing build times.

The Fathom features two such unicastings, which consolidate 146 structural components into just two parts. This innovative approach is made possible by Ford’s Shelbyville Technical Center, where the castings are produced using a complex process involving melting aluminum ingots at 1,300 degrees Fahrenheit and subjecting them to rigorous testing.

The unicastings are then shipped to the Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky, where they are assembled into the Fathom using a novel three-section production process. While details about the truck’s exterior design, battery, and charging capabilities are still scarce, Ford has revealed that the Fathom will seat five, offer more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, and feature bidirectional charging.

With a 0-60 mph time of around 4.5 seconds, the Fathom is shaping up to be a compelling option in the electric vehicle market.
