Mercedes-Benz Vans has launched series production of the new all-electric Mercedes-Benz VLE at its Vitoria plant in Spain, marking a pivotal moment in the site’s transformation into a cutting-edge, sustainable production hub for next-generation vans. The VLE is the first production model built on the brand’s newly developed, modular and powertrain-flexible van architecture, signaling the start of a new era for the Grand Limousine segment. The milestone was celebrated with an official event at the plant, attended by Thomas Klein, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Jordi Hereu, Spain’s Minister for Industry and Tourism, and Imanol Pradales, Acting President of the Basque Autonomous Community. The event underscored the plant’s growing industrial, strategic and regional significance as one of Mercedes-Benz Vans’ largest transformation projects in Europe. The VLE combines the ride comfort and dynamics of a luxury sedan with the space, versatility and flexibility of an MPV. It is powered by an 800-volt architecture enabling ultra-fast charging and delivers up to 700 kilometers of WLTP-certified range in high-capacity configurations, including versions with up to eight seats. The model is engineered for diverse applications, from family use to premium shuttle services. Provisional energy consumption for the VLE 300 electric is rated between 20.7 and 18.4 kWh/100 km, with zero tailpipe CO₂ emissions and a CO₂ class rating of A. At its core, the VLE runs on the intelligent Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which integrates all vehicle domains—from driver assistance and infotainment to performance—into a unified digital experience. “The VLE exemplifies how we drive innovation at Mercedes-Benz: fast, focused, and with the highest quality standards. We developed the VLE in record time thanks to a digital development approach, a strong cross-functional international team, and the Vitoria plant delivering on the Mercedes promise,” said Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management, Mercedes-Benz Group AG. The Vitoria plant’s transformation is part of a broader modernization initiative, involving major investments in new body, paint and assembly lines, as well as upgraded logistics and IT systems. The overhaul enables highly flexible, multi-powertrain production on a single line, all while maintaining ongoing production of existing models such as the V-Class, Vito and eVito. Vitoria is now the first global site to produce the VLE in series, with the Fuzhou plant in China set to follow later this year for the local market. “The VLE, as a Grand Limousine, is the perfect companion for countless applications—from flexible family transport to exclusive shuttle services. With the start of VLE production in Vitoria, we’re entering a new era. The team is highly motivated to get going and pioneer with the VLE. I’m proud that the site has implemented extensive preparations in record time—a clear testament to our team’s skill and flexibility,” said Thomas Klein, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans. The plant’s transformation has been powered by the dedication of around 5,000 direct employees, who underwent more than 160 training programs to master new technologies, materials, IT standards and processes. National and international upskilling initiatives have ensured quality, stability and a flawless launch. “The VLE’s start of production fills me with great pride—especially when I look at our team. The successful transformation of our plant and the launch of series production are the result of our employees’ daily commitment, competence, flexibility and passion in tackling complex challenges. They have driven this change and are making Vitoria a strong hub for the future of Mercedes-Benz Vans,” said Bernd Krottmayer, Plant Manager, Mercedes-Benz Vitoria.
