Bridgestone has launched the first commercial deployment of its airless “AirFree” tire technology in Japan, equipping an autonomous community shuttle in Higashiomi City, Shiga Prefecture. The tires entered regular service on 8 July on the city’s “Okueigenji Keiryu car green slow mobility service,” marking the transition from pilot projects to continuous public transport operations. This deployment follows a collaboration agreement signed with Higashiomi in January 2025. Bridgestone describes AirFree tires as puncture-proof and maintenance-free, eliminating the need for air pressure checks and reducing downtime. The technology is positioned as a solution for regions facing mobility challenges, such as the mountainous Okueigenji area, where an ageing population and transport operator shortages complicate access to local services. Bridgestone executive officer Toshiyuki Hasunuma stated that after repeated demonstration trials with other municipalities, the AirFree tire has now reached a major milestone with its first social implementation in Japan.
