Throughout 2026, evo has charted the evolution of the automotive world’s poster car, tracing a path from the 1920s Bentley Blower up through the motorsport icons of the 1960s, the wedges of the 1970s, the excesses of the 1980s, the serious 1990s, and the unpredictable new breed of the millennium. The final chapter in the December 2026 issue of evo brings together half a dozen of the most significant supercars of the present era, featuring models from establishment players Ferrari and Lamborghini, recent incumbent McLaren, alongside Aston Martin, Porsche, and Maserati. The 2020s introduced the first implementation of hybrid power to series-production supercars from Ferrari, McLaren, and Lamborghini. Maranello trickled down its hybrid hypercar tech with the SF90, a technical triumph though less compelling to drive than its Italian peers. Maserati’s MC20 won over evo in 2022 with its Ferrari F40 character, seductive looks, and explosive V6 twin-turbo engine, serving as a breath of fresh analogue air in a digital world. Lamborghini’s Revuelto blended analogue brilliance with 21st-century hybrid excellence, taking the crown as the greatest supercar of the decade and evo’s Car of the Year in 2025. Meanwhile, McLaren stayed true to turbocharged V8s and a slender kerb weight with the 750S, proving Woking’s appetite for speed remains untempered. Porsche took a different route, applying its t-hybrid system to the current 992.2 Turbo S purely for performance efficiency rather than zero-emissions targets, maintaining the 911 Turbo’s legendary status. Finally, Aston Martin is represented by the DBS Superleggera 770 Ultimate, a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive machine packing nearly 770 bhp as a send-off for the brand’s big-hearted engines before the Valhalla assumes supercar duties.
