Toyota has announced its next-generation hybrid powertrain built around an entirely new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder engine family. Designed as an integrated powertrain rather than an adaptation of an existing motor, this naturally aspirated 1.5-litre unit is intended to cover the performance range currently served by Toyota’s 1.8-litre engine and its existing 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit, which powers vehicles like the Toyota Hyryder SUV and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara in India with 115 PS and 141 Nm.

The new four-cylinder setup is slated to deliver higher power and torque alongside a target fuel economy improvement of more than 15%. Toyota aims to achieve this through reduced mechanical friction, improved thermal management, lower electrical losses, and optimized vehicle aerodynamics made possible by a smaller, lower-profile powertrain that enables a lower bonnet height.

The system is being developed alongside a multi-pathway platform that shares a common architecture for EVs, plug-in hybrids, and hybrids, allowing greater manufacturing flexibility and compatibility with renewable and carbon-neutral fuels. While relevant to markets like India where Toyota operates strong-hybrids, specific local launch plans, production details, and model applications have not yet been confirmed.
