General Motors is developing hybrid versions of the Chevy Traverse, Buick Enclave, and GMC Acadia, according to a report by Reuters citing anonymous sources familiar with the situation. These three-row mid-size SUVs are built at GM’s Lansing Delta Township assembly plant, where the company is investing $1.25 billion as part of over $2 billion in investments in the Lansing area over the next several years.

While GM did not officially announce the names of the new hybrid models or specify production start dates and system details, the factory is where the Acadia, Enclave, and Traverse are currently built. Last year, the factory marked its highest production numbers in its 20-year history with more than 291,000 vehicles rolling off the assembly line.

Currently, the only hybrid model GM produces is the Chevy Corvette. This strategic shift toward hybrid powertrains follows lower-than-expected adoption rates for fully electric vehicles, the elimination of federal tax credits for EVs and plug-in hybrids by the Trump administration, and sustained high gas prices in the United States, alongside competition from fuel-efficient lineups at automakers like Honda, Hyundai, Toyota, and Ford.

Part of the investment funding for the Lansing factory will come from a Domestic Manufacturing Conversion Grant restructured in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy.

Additionally, during a quarterly earnings call, GM CEO Mary Barra stated that the company will introduce hybrids in more than one segment, meaning gas-electric models will extend beyond three-row SUVs.
