North America’s largest private truck fleets are navigating a complex landscape of rising costs and shifting trade policies while maintaining service levels, according to the 2026 Transport Topics Top 100 Private Carriers list. The annual ranking, based on tractor counts, reveals a mixed picture of fleet growth, with Walmart retaining the top spot after expanding its fleet to 13,589 tractors—an increase of nearly 900 units year-over-year. The retail giant’s dominance underscores the strategic value of in-house logistics, especially as for-hire freight rates recover from a prolonged downturn. The 2026 list highlights significant consolidation through acquisitions, with several companies boosting their rankings by purchasing competitors. QXO Inc. surged nine spots to No. 61 after acquiring TopBuild Corp. for $17 billion and Kodiak Building Partners for approximately $2.25 billion, expanding its tractor fleet to 879 units. Lowe’s Companies re-entered the list at No. 83 following its October 2025 acquisition of Foundation Building Materials. In the food and beverage sector, C&S Wholesale Grocers debuted at No. 39 after spending $1.77 billion to acquire SpartanNash, doubling its tractor fleet to 1,291 vehicles. Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits climbed 13 positions to No. 43, growing its fleet from 926 to 1,204 tractors through acquisitions of Clare Rose Inc. and Eagle Rock Distributing’s Colorado operations. Chemical distributor Brenntag North America, ranked No. 55, expanded its fleet after acquiring Chem Tech Services in November. The list also introduced several newcomers, including Quanta Services at No. 62 with 877 tractors, waste management firms Burrtec Waste Industries and Edco Disposal at No. 69 (788 tractors combined), lubricant distributor RelaDyne at No. 86, egg producer Cal-Maine Foods at No. 97 (514 tractors), oil field services firm SLB Ltd. at No. 98, and automotive parts retailer AutoZone Inc. at No. 100 (496 tractors). The rankings reflect a broader trend of sector-specific consolidation, with notable entries in food service, grocery, beverage, petroleum/chemical, industrial gases, agriculture, and construction. Transport Topics compiles the list using data from an annual fleet survey, company correspondence, and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration registration records.
