Proficient Auto Logistics acquires Hansen & Adkins for $130M in mid-August deal

Proficient Auto Logistics, a Jacksonville, Fla.-based auto hauler, will acquire Hansen & Adkins for $130 million in a deal expected to close in mid-August. The acquisition will more than double Proficient’s company-owned fleet capacity and expand its operations into Canada. Proficient operates around 900 tractors and trailers with 800 employees, while Hansen & Adkins employs over 900 drivers and support staff. The combined entity is projected to move more than 4 million vehicles annually across North America, making it the largest auto hauler on the continent. Proficient, formed from the merger of five auto haulers in May 2024, is the only publicly traded auto hauler. The deal marks its first entry into the Canadian market. Proficient reported weaker second-quarter performance, with deliveries totaling 580,962 vehicles—a drop of 8% compared to Q2 2025. Company-owned deliveries fell 7.2% year-over-year to 204,778, while subhauler deliveries declined 8.4% to 376,184. The company’s operating ratio worsened to 99.5 from 96.7 in the prior-year period, contributing to a widened loss of $3.2 million, up from $100,000 in Q2 2025. Proficient CEO Rick O’Dell cited recovering automotive production, normalized dealer inventories, and tighter industry capacity as factors supporting improved shipment volumes and pricing dynamics. He noted regulatory actions and driver recertification requirements as contributors to reduced capacity following a multiyear freight recession.
