BMW Group is marking a quarter-century of MINI Design with a deep dive into how the brand evolved from the iconic Classic Mini into a contemporary design legend. A new video, “From the Original to the Original – 25 Years of MINI Design,” released on the BMW Group YouTube channel, traces the brand’s design journey through sketches, key decisions, and insider insights from Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design, and Holger Hampf, Head of MINI Design. The film highlights how MINI preserved the soul of the original while forging a new identity under BMW Group ownership since 2001, avoiding retro styling in favor of a fresh interpretation rooted in technology, design, and culture.

The Classic Mini, born in 1959 under Sir Alec Issigonis, was defined by compact proportions, short overhangs, space efficiency, direct driving pleasure, and a cheeky character. MINI’s designers faced a pivotal challenge after BMW Group acquired Rover in 1994: how to honor the original’s essence while creating something new. The result was not a retro revival but a distinct evolution into a style icon with emotional resonance and a strong personality.

MINI Design’s signature elements—round headlights, compact proportions, short overhangs, and the brand’s famed go-kart driving feel—remain central, now amplified by customisation and expressive details. The current MINI Family embraces the “Charismatic Simplicity” design language, stripping back to essentials while enabling vast personalisation. The MINI Cooper Electric exemplifies this with sculpted surfaces, a puristic modern body, a compact steering wheel, and a round Central Display that echoes the classic Mini’s minimalist ethos.

This approach positions MINI to lead into an electric and digital future without losing its identity. The milestone year also coincides with the limited-edition MINI Cooper Oxford Edition, celebrating 25 years of modern MINI production and its British heritage.
