Republican voters, particularly those aligned with the MAGA movement, are rapidly withdrawing support for the ongoing war in the Middle East as gasoline prices surge back above $4 per gallon. A Politico poll reveals that two-thirds of MAGA Republicans now believe the war’s economic burden is unjustified, a sharp decline from May when only half held that view. Support for ending the war regardless of cost has risen by 7 percentage points, with one in five MAGA voters ready to abandon the conflict entirely.
The shift reflects growing frustration among Trump-aligned voters over rising living costs, with 57% of Americans describing the cost of living as worse than they can ever remember. The White House, according to a source close to the administration, is acutely aware of the political impossibility of escalating the war, with senior officials acknowledging that achieving the president’s desired outcome is now out of reach due to lack of public support. Gas prices are emerging as a decisive factor in the upcoming November elections, with 46% of Americans stating that fuel costs will influence their vote.

Nearly 40% of voters, including 49% of MAGA Republicans and 57% of non-MAGA Republicans, are considering switching parties in response to economic pressures. In 13 competitive congressional districts where gas prices have risen faster than the national average, nine Republican incumbents face heightened electoral vulnerability. Republican strategists are grappling with a delicate balancing act: acknowledging voter pain over fuel costs while avoiding backlash from Trump, whose base is increasingly vocal about the war’s financial toll.
The polling underscores how economic realities—especially at the pump—are reshaping political allegiances and forcing Republicans to confront the limits of their traditional hawkish stance on Middle East conflicts.
