Unifor: Ford’s 5.0L Coyote V8 Demand Set to Rise Through 2029

Canadian auto workers’ union Unifor has ratified a new three-year master agreement with Ford Motor Company that locks in pay hikes, richer benefits, and production commitments for the automaker’s Canadian plants. The contract explicitly addresses the future of Ford’s 5.0L V8 Coyote engine, forecasting rising demand through 2029 and authorizing the company to secure additional engine and machining components from outside suppliers if the Essex Engine Plant’s in-house capacity proves insufficient.

Despite any external sourcing, Ford will keep the Essex plant as the lead producer of the Coyote V8. The agreement also reaffirms Ford’s intention to continue building and selling V8 engines under the current regulatory climate.

To back the plan, Ford is injecting $500 million USD over the next three years into the Essex Engine Plant’s facilities and tooling, with much of the outlay earmarked for expanding Coyote engine and machining capabilities. The same contract guarantees production of the 5.0L Coyote at Essex and the 7.3L V8 Godzilla at the Windsor Engine Plant through September 2029.
