The Honda Civic’s entry-level trim sports a 150-HP 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, achieving 32 MPG city, 41 highway, and 36 combined, with a starting price of $25,890.

The Volkswagen Jetta’s base model is powered by a 158-HP turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, boasting 29 MPG city, 40 highway, and 34 combined, with a starting price of $25,270.

Other notable options that barely miss the 40-MPG mark include the Kia K4 sedan, which achieves a highway economy of 39 MPG, with a cost of entry starting at $23,535, and the Hyundai Sonata, which reaches 38 MPG, with a starting price of $28,695.

The Mini Cooper and Acura Integra A-Spec also make the list, with highway economy ratings of 39 MPG and 37 MPG, respectively.

These cars offer a mix of sizes and shapes, including some that can be had with three pedals, and are considered fun to drive, with agile handling and good ride quality.
