A Tesla Model 3 operating with an automated driving-assistance system left the roadway in Katy, Texas, on Friday evening and crashed through a brick house at high speed, killing a 76-year-old woman inside. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, 44-year-old driver Michael Butler was traveling eastbound when he allegedly failed to maintain his lane, departed the road, and struck the residence. Butler told investigators that an automated driving-assistance system was engaged at the time of the collision, though authorities have not specified whether it was Tesla’s Autopilot or Full Self-Driving (Supervised). The impact sent the vehicle through the home’s exterior wall, fatally injuring Martha Avila Mantilla, who was airlifted to a hospital but later died from her injuries. Family members noted the crash occurred in an area of the home frequently occupied by children, though no one else was seriously injured. Butler suffered injuries but showed no signs of intoxication and has cooperated with investigators; no charges have been filed as the case remains under investigation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened its own probe into the incident. The crash has reignited scrutiny over Tesla’s automation claims and the safety of Level 2 driver-assistance systems, which industry experts warn can create a false sense of security for drivers. While details of the moments leading to the crash remain unclear, the fatal outcome underscores broader concerns about autonomous vehicle technology, driver responsibility, and the real-world risks of over-reliance on such systems.
