The Ford Model T, which debuted in 1908, revolutionized the auto industry with its rugged simplicity and sold over 15 million units.
However, despite its simplicity, the Model T’s transmission is notoriously difficult to operate, especially for modern drivers.
The two-speed epicyclic transmission features planetary gears, a reverse, three pedals, and a hand lever, making it behave differently from modern transmissions.

To operate the Model T’s transmission, drivers need to understand how the three pedals and hand lever work together.
The left pedal controls the forward gears, the central pedal gives reverse, and the right-hand pedal is the brake.
The transmission also features brake bands that correspond to each pedal, which can be confusing for modern drivers.

Despite its complexity, the Model T’s transmission was considered approachable for its time, and Ford even advertised the car as easy to drive for women.
With a few minutes of training, new owners could master the act of shifting a Model T, but for modern drivers, it may take some getting used to.
