Virginia is rolling out AI-powered traffic cameras that will issue tickets for rolling stop signs and failing to yield at crosswalks, starting July 1. The new law, Senate Bill 84, expands automated enforcement beyond speeding to include stop-sign and crosswalk violations in school zones and other designated areas. Local governments must first approve the programs and conduct public warning periods before citations are issued. The AI cameras, including those from Obivo, photograph violators and send images to law enforcement for verification before mailing tickets. Faces in photos are automatically blurred for privacy. Citations are civil penalties and won’t impact insurance rates or driver’s licenses, even if multiple tickets are accumulated. The law includes safeguards such as signage requirements, data retention limits, equipment calibration standards, and public disclosure measures. Failure to comply can invalidate citations. Adoption is optional for cities, counties, and towns, leaving residents to lobby local leaders for or against the systems. The move reflects Virginia’s strict traffic enforcement culture and raises ongoing debates about privacy and automated policing.
