A surge in bankruptcies has hit the US trucking industry, with 221 small trucking companies filing for bankruptcy in 2026, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. This trend is attributed to a combination of factors, including rising fuel prices, increasing insurance costs, and onerous debt arrangements. Small carriers, typically operating 20 or fewer tractors, are particularly vulnerable to these pressures, with two-thirds reporting flat or declining revenue compared to the previous year. Many of these companies rely heavily on credit to finance expensive equipment and are susceptible to rising interest rates and variable interest-rate loans. The industry’s contraction from the COVID-19 era, when demand for deliveries and government loans created favorable conditions for new businesses, has also contributed to the current financial strain. Larger companies, such as J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc., are better equipped to absorb higher costs, but even they are feeling the squeeze. The situation has led to a ‘feast or famine’ scenario, where companies with no equipment debt and qualified safety records are thriving, while smaller operators are struggling to stay afloat.
