Volkswagen has confirmed that development of the electric ninth-generation Golf has been paused indefinitely due to financial difficulties within the company. The announcement was made as part of the company’s results for the period January-September 2026, which showed a significant decline in net cash flow, operating result, and revenue. The electric Golf, initially planned to launch in 2028, had already been delayed due to software glitches and prioritization of the new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) architecture.

The current ICE-powered eighth-generation Golf, introduced in 2019, will likely remain in production for over a decade, with possible styling and tech updates to keep it competitive. The electric ID.3, which entered production in 2019, will also continue to be produced with updates. The delay of the ID.Golf is part of a larger effort by VW to reduce costs and prioritize investments, with the company planning to halve its lineup and reduce its workforce by up to 50,000 people.

The operating margin also fell from 4.4% to 4.1%. The VW Passenger Cars brand was particularly hard hit, with a 1.8% decline in sales, a 3% decline in sales revenue, and a 45% decline in operating result.
